THATHERAS
Thatheras are a community of traditional craftsman who are engaged in the craft of making handcrafted brass and copper utensils. It is not only a form of livelihood for these craftsmen, but it binds them together with a common lifestyle. It is a matter of pride this is the only Indian craft form to find place in the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage but this fact alone cannot help to revitalize the dying craft.
To supplement the efforts of P-TAL, the District Administration of Amritsar supported the Project Virasat as they exhibited their products at three main exhibition, without any display charges during the year 2017-18.
The exhibitions were organized in the cities of Chandigarh, held from September 22-23, Pitex in Amritsar in December, Aazamgarh Exhibition in Delhi in February and The Italian Exhibition held in March. The products displayed at these exhibitions received immense appreciation by the customers, that helped the Thatheras earn revenue of Rs. 16,000, Rs. 61,000, Rs. 59,000 and Rs. 95,000 respectively from these exhibitions. The exhibitions have opened great demand avenues for the Thatheras. Such events have also helped them gain recognition from across the market as the Thatheras exhibit their products on their own in these exhibitions.
